Wishing on Airplanes

Have you ever heard of making wishes on a hundred airplanes? No? Well, let me tell you a story.

The year was 2007, I was in high school, and I was talking to a boy in my year as we were sitting on the steps of our school's main building. It was sportsfest week, so our classes were cut short to give way to the students who were participating in the games. We were planning to go out with friends after school when he noticed an airplane passing us by. He pointed it out to me and said that if I could count the airplanes passing by up to a hundred, I could make a wish on them and they would come true. And I believed him. Every day after that, I kept on trying to count the planes passing by up to a hundred so I could make a wish. I never reached a hundred planes in a day, no matter how hard I try. So I stopped trying after we broke up. Aside from reminding me of him, it also reminds me of how foolish I had been to believe him that it was an actual thing.

Then last Saturday night, I was out with friends, and we were at a cafe overlooking the city. I found myself counting the airplanes again. I counted 25 planes in total. When I realized what I was doing, I stopped myself, not because of the painful memories that come with it, but it was simply because I know now that nothing comes out of wishing on airplanes. You have to actually work on your goals and dreams for them to actualize, and not to rely on wishing on airplanes or wishing stars.

I am still working on making my dreams come true. Bit by bit, I am trying my hardest to build the life I am dreaming of. I still have a long way to go, but I know I will get there soon. I just hope that the person who told me about wishing on airplanes is doing well and is living the life he longs for, even if I am no longer part of it. I hope he is happy.
